Akzo Nobel is to sell its decorative paints business in South-East Asia for $1.35bn, according to reporting carried by Morningstar and Dow Jones.

Decorative paints are the coatings sold to households, decorators and retailers — as distinct from the group’s performance coatings arm, which supplies industrial, marine and protective customers. The reporting did not spell out which manufacturing assets, brand licences or distribution contracts travel with the business.

Separate coverage by Yahoo Finance and Investing.com linked the transaction to Nippon Paint, and said the Japanese group’s shares rose on the news.

Why this matters

Decorative coatings is a scale business. Margins depend on brand strength, the density of a distributor network and shelf space in retail — all of which take years to build. A transaction of this size hands the buyer an established regional footprint rather than one assembled from nothing, and it removes a competitor from the group of suppliers bidding for the same painters and retailers.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Whether the price is fixed or subject to adjustment at completion.
  • Which plants, brands and distribution agreements are included in the perimeter of the sale.
  • When the deal is expected to close, and which regulators must approve it.
