EU-backed project develops bio-based functional coatings
PERFECOAT, an EU-funded research project, is developing high-performance bio-based coatings for wood and decorative applications.

PERFECOAT, a project funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research programme, is developing high-performance bio-based functional coatings for wood and decorative applications, according to the Commission’s CORDIS project record.
Bio-based coatings replace part of the fossil-derived binder with material derived from biomass. The research question is not whether a bio-based binder can be made — it can — but whether it performs: hardness, water resistance, UV stability and shelf life are where alternatives to established acrylics have historically fallen short.
Project records describe objectives and consortiums, not results. ArtCoatings has not seen published performance data from the project.
Why this matters
Decorative coatings carry a large share of their carbon footprint in the binder. If bio-based formulations reach commercial performance, the change reaches specifiers as a new line in a technical data sheet — and eventually as a requirement in public procurement.
What remains unconfirmed
- Whether any formulation has reached commercial readiness.
- Measured performance against conventional binders.
- The intended route to market and cost position.
